To celebrate the 53rd anniversary of Hip Hip in 2026, we are releasing a set of photos in a coffee table book to commemorate the 5Ptz. Back on September 2010, JP Biamby captured these photographs while visiting the 5Ptz in Long Island City, Queens.
This was before the culmination of the 40th Anniversary of Hip Hop at the 5Pointz in August of 2013 which was promoted in Time Out New York as “the event of the summer that was not to be missed.”
This was before the abandoned building located 45-46 Davis Street in Queens was whitewashed in November of 2013.
This was before the building was demolished to make way for a New York City real estate project that hijacked its name.
This is way back when the 5Pointz was considered to be ‘A Mecca’ of Hip Hop” and NOT just another fancy high rise building in New York City.
The name is described by its curator as ‘the 5 Boroughs of New York City coming together at one point’…the 5Pointz. Hosting performances from graffiti artists, b-boys, MCs & DJs from around the globe for over 2 decades, the 5Pointz was a part of hip hop, an in your face type of expressionist art that invited collaboration and incited competition.
The 5Pointz was a part of the evolution of hip hop; a dynamic force that thrived on constant innovation. The 5Pointz was not only a pillar of the community, it inspired a new generation of hip hop pioneers, making it a recognizable global icon of the culture at that time.
